Class HC Licence

CLASS MR OR HR TO CLASS HC DRIVER TRAINING

If you have held a Class MR or HR for 1 year, you can undertake driver training in a semi trailer using the log book system or if preferred, through lessons followed by a test. After the first two lessons, your instructor is in a position to more accurately assess your skill level and advise on further training needs.

Our vehicles are fitted with Road Ranger transmissions coupled to loaded semi trailers. This means that you will obtain an unrestricted drivers licence.

As a guide, we have found from our prior experience, the average minimum practical hours required to successfully complete your HC licence is around 20 hours. We also offer a 2 hour assessment drive in one of our vehicles to help determine the length of time you are likely to need for lessons.

If you wish to have lessons or require any further information, feel free to contact our office or email us and we will assist you in any way possible. We will then book your lessons and final review time and confirm these in writing.

Important note: - There is no longer a requirement to have a learners permit to upgrade your drivers licence to this level, you meet the minimum driving experience according to Regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act. If you are unsure that you meet the requirements, you will need to seek advice from the Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA) Customer Service Centre.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the requirements as you may find that Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA) will not upgrade your licence, even if you have passed your driver training and assessment.

CLASS CAR OR LR TO CLASS HC DRIVER TRAINING

This class of licence will allow you to drive semi trailers with a maximum of 1 trailer. You can also drive any vehicle that is in class C, LR, MR, AND HR

The following details outline the legal requirements as laid down by the Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA) for persons wishing to upgrade their licence from Class Car or LC to Heavy Combination (HC).

By law you must attend a "Training in Lieu of Experience" (TILE) course, which is held over two consecutive week days OR on a weekend. The course commences from 7.30 am and concludes each day at 5.45 p.m.

Our vehicles are fitted with Road Ranger transmissions coupled to loaded semi trailers. This means that you will obtain an unrestricted drivers licence."

As a guide, we have found from our prior experience, the average minimum practical hours required to successfully complete your HC licence under the CBT Logbook method is around 20-24 hours.

If you wish to commence training you will be required to complete a course enrolment form which you will need to lodge at our office with a deposit, at which time we will make a booking for you for the TILE course. We will then issue you a letter, which you must take to the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure to obtain a HC Learner Permit.

We will also book your lessons and final review time and confirm these in writing.

Please Note: You must obtain your permit before lessons can take place and have it with you on each occasion you will be driving.

You must have prior experience in driving manual motor vehicles as a pre requisite to starting driver training in heavy vehicles. You will also need to have a current South Australian Drivers Licence at the time of your driving test or assessment. If you think that you may have a medical condition that could prevent you from upgrading to a heavy vehicle licence, contact the Customer Service Centre at Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA).
