Class HR Licence

CLASS C, LR or MR TO CLASS HR DRIVER TRAINING

This class of licence will allow you to drive any rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles. You will need this licence if you drive a vehicle exceeding a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 15,000kg but are still limited to towing a trailer with a GVM up to 9,000kg

If you have held a Class C licence for at least 2 years, or a Class LR or MR for 1 year, you can undertake driver training in a truck using the log book system or if preferred, through lessons followed by a test. After the first two lessons, your instructor is in a position to more accurately assess your skill level and advise on further training needs.

Our vehicles are fitted with Road Ranger transmissions. This means that you will obtain an unrestricted drivers licence.

As a guide, we have found from our prior experience, the average minimum practical hours required to successfully complete your HR licence, is around 16-18 hours.

We also offer a 2 hour assessment drive to help determine the length of time you are likely to need for lessons.

Important note: - There is no longer a requirement to have a learners permit to upgrade your drivers licence to this level, however you must meet the minimum driving experience according to Regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act. If you are unsure that you meet the requirements, you will need to seek advice from the Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA) Customer Service Centre.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the requirements as you may find that Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA) will not upgrade your licence, even if you have passed your driver training and assessment.

There is no special licence required to drive buses or coaches. Your HR licence will allow you to drive 3 axle coaches and on MR licence will allow you to drive 2 axle buses. You will also need to obtain accreditation from the office of Public Transport to carry fee paying passengers.

You must have prior experience in driving manual motor vehicles as a pre requisite to starting driver training in heavy vehicles. You will also need to have a current South Australian Drivers Licence at the time of your driving test or assessment. If you think that you may have a medical condition that could prevent you from upgrading to a heavy vehicle licence, contact the Customer Service Centre at Department for Transport, Energy and Intrastructure (formally Transport SA).
